A lizard is really your only option. Frogs and turtles both get too stressed by handling. This is true for some lizards as well, but many seem to tolerate it well. I would insist on not getting him a bearded... something that gets that big is not a good pet for a kid who doesn't know if he'll enjoy the hobby or not. That's my two cents.
