From Planted tanks, to Chichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi Sean. I'm going from cichlids to planted tank. I made my co2 reactor based on your video with some minor adjustments...simple design but very effective.

You will not go wrong with a GT. I've kept and bred flowerhorns for years but I've turned away from them due to so much cross breeding, their immune system leave them susceptible to so much...especially internal parasites.

I have to warn you though...a pair may form from your group and before you know it, you'll end up with a room full of growout tanks like many of us. Lol! It's like starting a low tech tank leading to a very expensive & time consuming high tech planted tank.

I've ordered from both Wetspot and Jeff and they're both top notch. I would put in sand.

I would, without question, get the FH. So much personality in those fish. Good luck!

Beautiful nature aquarium. There is no chance this type of scape can coexist with large digging cichlid. A few dwarf cichlid may be OK. Even angels and discus will ruin your grass cover by depositing detritus. Besides, a big cichlid in a miniaturized scape is out of proportion, like a giant in a small world.

I am not shooting for a nature aquarium, just trying to get lush growth with whatever plants do well with my messy cichlid. So far the trident Java fern and African fern are doing well, the Crypts are melting, and the anubias are browning. May be only fern like my water. I will add a few regular java fern and see how it goes. It's a trial and error in progress.

Those are some of the largest Panamensis I have seen, yours look like mini-Viejas! Awesome.
Yes, they look like mini Vieja, but they are not big fish. The male is only 5 inch. They are fiesty couple though, fighting off fish twice their size. The pair in the youtube is an old couple, not sure how much time is left for them. I have young pairs in my 125, but so far they have not produced any youngs for me. I picked up the juvies in auctions and grow them out They are almost never sold in LFSs.
