ideally a 75g would be minimum, a 2ft wide tank would be a plus. if your son really want one and you can afford to get one then why not sale the 55g and get an other tank? or if money isn't a question keep the 55g as an emergency tank and get an other 75g+ off CL

personally i would teflon all then threaded pieces just to be safe.
I went back and teflon-taped a few of the threaded components on the RO/DI unit and that seems to have helped a LOT. I'll get an occasional bubble but for the most part there is no air moving through the system now. I'm getting lower TDS readings as a result. I'm trying to be careful about testing the water... I get a consistent 0 ppm for water that has flowed through the DI filter, but when it's RO only the water sometimes reads low, as in 7 ppm, and other times much higher, as in 16 ppm. Any ideas?

By the way, should I redirect this thread into the SETUP group? I'm not sure that this is the correct forum considering I'm doing a lot of setup stuff now. I need more feedback about solenoid valves and timers. I'm not sure how to repost all this though.

Thanks.

Awesome build. Looking forward to following along.

Did you get the 155 tank from a guy in Long Island, NY?

Yes, I did. I found it on craig's list for $275 from a couple in East Meadow. They had this exotic cat, like a miniature leopard, in their house. I can't remember what they're called but it was cool as anything I've seen.

you can keep the thread here going as you are setting up a new piranha tank so in the piranha section it would be fine.

if you have question regarding certain equipment you can always start new topics in the setup forum or the DIY forum (you are working on a DIY auto drip system). just copy everything here regarding the item in question and paste on the new thread. or just copy the link of the post that contains the information you want to copy and paste the link to the setup thread. click on the post number on the right hand side and you'll see the link for that specific post.

You got a hell of a deal. I saw that ad as well and wanted to pick it up but I had no space at the time. Glad you got it. :)

Thanks a lot. I was scanning Craig's list for a long time, a few months maybe. The size of the tank is about as big as I could go in the space where it fits in my son's room, and considering it is on the second floor of the house. The cat they had was a "serval" -- http://www.exoticcatz.com/speciesserval.html
It blew all our minds. Pretty wild stuff. Thanks for reading the thread and commenting bro.

...when I told him we would be taking down the 55 gallon once the 155 gallon was up and running he asked, "why can't we just have two tanks?" Good question, my son. Very good question.

Here's an update on some of the things I've done with this project.

I received the 70 W metal halide fixture that I bought after the recommendation I got on this forum. It is awesome. I've been using it on the 55 to get an idea of how it looks and I'm really pleased. The intense, shimmering light highlights the colors of everything in the tank. The scales on each fish are clearly visible. I see so much more than I could before.

I also had been having problems with the RO/DI unit. I have opted to not send the waste water back into the hot water line. That caused a problem with the unit. I replaced the RO membrane with a new 50 gpd one and flow restrictor. It is working beautifully. 90 psi after the booster pump, 5 gallons of 0 ppm TDS water every two hours on the dot. I've added several gauges and TDS meters to keep track of the system's efficiency.

I build a 20 gallon acrylic tank to mix RO right and any other additives to the fresh RO water before it enters the sump. There will be an airstone in there as well. The water will spend about one day in the mixing tank before entering the sump and main tank. The glue is still drying so I will take more pictures of that part of the project tomorrow. I also purchased a dosing pump but haven't set that up yet.

With the 155 I removed the overflows and the silicone holding them in place. I want to buy a 3D background and it won't fit with those bulky overflows in there.

As for the background itself I really liked one of the Aqua Terra backgrounds but I can't get it anywhere. Even my second choice is something they'd have to cut in half.

I plan on removing the center braces to the 155 and replacing them with either thin threaded rods or acrylic bracing. I know a lot of people fear doing this but I cannot get the trim off to get the background in, and I really don't want to cut the background up to insert it. Also, the braces create shadows under the MH light that I'd like to get rid of.

Pics in next post...

can't wait for pix and good luck replacing the top braces with acrylic or glass.
