frontosa 220

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
May not be foolproof, but when raising groups the largest individual(s) are typically male and the smallest female and those in between can go either way. The larger the group, the more accurate this tends to be. Again, may not 100% foolproof, but pretty consistent ime. At that size you may well be able to vent them, though the smallest might be a little tricky to distinguish.

As far as saying there are no males based on a photo like that, doesn't work with fronts, especially not at that size.

thanks again !!!

I would like to add about three more but i am having a hard time finding more kits. I dont want to mix diffrent types.

but i do think that one of them is a male I only say this because that one has grown much more than the others. I really have no idea on the sex of any of them.

I defnitely would not mix them and it is possible there is a male. as neutrino states below it is only a guess from a picture like that. If you get a chance post a pic of the one you think is male. Usually the largest is male in a given spawn, but I have had females outgrow males in many cases. If your not into breeding them then no worries either way, and enjoy this is beautiful setup!

I do not dissagree with this neutrino, but I have bred them for 30 years and either I have a pretty good eye, or just good luck :)

Well, I wouldn't argue against someone getting an eye for them with 30 years experience :D ...I agree that you do get a feel or eye for it after a while (and I haven't kept them as long, more like 12-14 years). But I also agree with you above, hard to tell from the above photo.

Also, regarding mixing them. Would be one thing to mix a completely different type for a while, if it's a type that you can distinguish accurately-- that is until they start breeding as you don't want cross-breeds. But when it comes to mixing Zaires, yes, there's always been a debate over how much difference there is between the different Zaires, but regardless of that the trouble with mixing them is if you ever get fry, they're no longer Kitumba (or whatever other strain). They become generic Zaire blues, not what most people are looking for, and they also become worth less $ than a pure strain.

You guys have a ton more experience with them that I do. As I stated these are my first Africans. I have always kept central and South American stuff. The last photo posted I'd the largest one. It is not the best photo but it is much larger than the rest and has a little different forehead shape than the others. I am hoping that one is a male and the rest female. I have no plans to breed them but it would be nice to have a big dominate male in the tank

You are well on your way to gaining some insight on African's with this setup.

Time will tell but if they are all female you can always find a male down the road and he will think he is in heaven :)

thanks !!!

i basiclly followed these instructions. http://www.instructables.com/id/3D-Aquarium-Background/

but i used drylock and not concrete.

Nice set up!!
So you basically replaced the concrete with drylock? How is it holding? Any issues? Anything else to do when you use drylock? Use it straight out of the can or thin it out? As for coloring, what did you use exactly? Please share the product numbers of the drylock and dye.

I have a 75 gal that I want to add a background like yours.
Thanks for your help and motivation!!
