I really really want a frontosa now. My lfs has like 1 inchers. But my 48 isnt all the big so i cant fit a mega front in there. Is there a smaller species of fronts or am i destined to have to sell my front once he gets too big?

a 48 should b fine about 2 years maybe, fonts take a long time to grow, really long that is why they are expensive but they are worth it!

thnx how is the market for them, 2 years is a long time and once hes too big would i be able to sell him easily?

whats a good price, LFS has em for $20 - (emplyee discount) = $16 (us) good or bad?

yep thats a cheap price. i barley can find them out here and when i do they are about 1-2" and 30-30$

THough one guy near me sells some large Clown loaches, Large fronts and other slow growing monsters but they are MAJOR$$$$$

a 8" front is like 150$ near me.

The biggest one in our display tanks is for sale at my work. $125 for a 10 inch+ hes huge but a big wussy, he may be smaller or larger. he hides in a log all day and its hard to tell how big he is.

But im definitly going to get one, yay!

fronts def. dont come in a smaller variation but they are pretty cool and just like everyone else said the 48 will hold over for a long time =) but if you wanted to actually keep bigger ones one would be alright in a 75 and more than that aq 125 is good just incase... anywho good luck!

i still live with my parents, so getting a bigger tank right now is out of the question. But you said the 48 will hold him for 2 years? i hope so.

the LFS are having trouble stocking Frontas they are in high demand in my area. I have a small one, but I know in the state of IN they run 20 and up. At work when we get large ones in they sell in a few days at pretty good prices. I would say you will get your money back at least. just remember to take pics to remember it by.

I disagree...

In 2 years, given proper water changes and a good diet, that fish will be 10" plus.

I have a group of 5, see this post for pics. In the post, I say that the fish is about a year old and 5 inches but I would say he is more accurately about 10 months old and probably 6 inches. He has hit a major growth spurt in the last couple of weeks.

Frontosas being slow growers is overstated in my opinion. They grow at about the same rate as any other African it's just that they have a longer way to go ;) That being said, they certainly don't grow as fast as say an Oscar. But then again Oscars do nothing but eat and poop all day so they grow outrageously fast...

I would not recommend Frontosas in a 48 gallon tank. They are happiest, and the males show the best color and shape when they are kept in groups. You can't fit a group in a 48 gallon tank. Why not just pick a smaller Tanganyikan? How about a group of Calvus? A colony of shellies would be nice. It would allow you to get a nice big bunch of young fish in a 48 without the risk of crowding and you wouldn't need to worry about selling them off. I'll never understand people that buy fish and then sell them off. Don't you love your fish?
