Frontosa tank mates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm definitely no expert, but I've been gathering info on Front's as I'm trying to set-up a Front. tank of my own. From what I've heard they do best in groups, preferably in a group of 1 male to 2 females minimum more females can also work and helps divide aggression between them. Though Front's aren't really aggressive especially in comparison to CA/SA cichlids, though they can be slightly inclined to predation if their tankmates aren't of adequate size. Some have had pretty good success mixing them with Dat's and I personally think the combo would make an impressive display.

I had a big front who was on his own and I added more fronts but I added a partition in the tank for 2 days so they could get used to each other but couldn't do any harm

I've got my Fronts with Altolamprologus Calvus (Black Zambian) and Synodonis Petricola. The plan is to get the Fronts into their own big tank and go with a colony of them. There is no aggression in this tank currently mind you the Alpha is only about 6" long right now.

Larger blue dolphins and phenochilus tanzanians would work too. I have a 14" wild caught burundi in my 220G mixed mostly male peacock/hap tank. The frontosa was actually put in at a later time in the established tank but no one messes with him except for my only Central American 8" midas who is the tank boss. The midas will ocassionally chase him around the tank.

I have success with the following as tank mates to a colony of 9 Fronts:

a) Azureus Hap (5")
b) Insignus Tanzania (6")
c) Tangerine Tiger (6")
d) Taiwan Reef (4")
e) Ruby Red Peacock (4")
f) Usisya Flavescent (5")

The Fronts are 5-7 inches WC Mobas. One of the female fronts though is quite feisty. If not for the bigger male Fronts, she can definitely rule the tank.

No luck with Cyrtocara Blue Dolphins. They are very active and when I mixed a colony of 5 Blue Mooris, the infighting between the females tend to stress the Fronts.

I've got a large front that would not tolerate any other fronts. I put in a bunch of peacocks and he ignores them...
Normally fronts like to be with other fronts, but that happens occasionally. Had one like that once. In fact this particular one wouldn't tolerate any fish of similar size to him and really almost no other male fish. Would leave even very small fry completely alone, though.

Point is, they have tendencies but it's not always predictable what a particular individual front will do.

Base on my experience, fronts do well in a colony. They dont bully their tankmates which are altolamprolugus, in fact I have observed that the smaller alto attacks my fronts LOL

I have had good luck with most tangs, comps, calvus, lamps, julis, syno cats, etc. if you plan on adding more Fronts try to get some half his size then there should be no competition.
