Anyone keeping fronts with central americans. Besides aggression issues are there any drawbacks.

I have had a Front with an oscar and a Texas for over 2 years. I have also had a jag with it and some others. The jag grew too big and was removed but not for aggression on either side. The front will chase smaller tankmates but hasn't seriously hurt any.
Other fish his size or larger don't really mess with him.

No, I wouldn't do it.

Centrals don't come from soft acidic water. What would the long term effects be of keeping both at 7.5pH. Most people don't alter their water for keeping fish, do you?

One valid point I just recently read was most juvies of today are introduced to normal PH type of water conditions.. Not like "the old days"... Anyone else hear this?

Most of the juvies are tank bred and raised to be used to less hard and less alkaline water. Unless you're dealing with wild fish, you're not going to have any problems other than aggression.

That said, I'm a purist (old world with old world, new world with new world), so I wouldn't do it.

ive read about people doing it. i asked about it on the lakes section but the majority vote is no because they are from different areas, so speak a different "language", more than water issues came up. you read about it all the time and a lot of the time its quite successful. obviously avoiding the big dogs like devils, dovii etc. more people say no because they like to keep the lake tanks pure much like most cichlid lovers hate hybrids from what ive figured out.
my opinion is that its your tank so its up to you as long as its not just a target to a mean fish, fronts are too nice. with regards to water perameters, if the front is tank bred then it shouldnt be an issue. avoiding extremes of course.

I have a buddy that keeps a front with festae, cutteri, and chocolates all get along fine. No health issues for him or myself

It can be done, but should be mixed with ca cichlids that are not too aggressive...so go with some of the more placid types (that are too big to be eaten).
