Frontosa, Yellow labs, possibly a peacock and suggestions NEEDED

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you must get a Lab with the Fronts, don't get one that is twice as big. It should be near the same size or smaller. They grow much quicker than the Fronts. So, they will be a little more dominant in the tank until the Fronts get bigger. But, you need to have more than 2 Fronts in the tank anyway. It should be six, but in that tank, 4 might be okay for awhile. One will dominate over the other and chase it all day if you only have two. You need more in the tank to diffuse aggression. True, they are not as aggressive as other cichlids, but they still do show aggression. The Labs are much more aggressive eaters and they are more active in the tank, but the Fronts will eventually get less shy.

I would not get peacocks as you will end up with blind frontosa. I have heard of keeping electric yellows with fronts and it was successful, however, in my own experience i had a 14" mpimbwe frontosa eat a 5" yellow lab and choke/die. Frontosa are very slow growers and will likely be around 5-6" in 2 yrs. alpha male maybe 7". drift wood is not really the best idea as it lowers the ph and most pieces have sharp points that can blind your frontosa as frontosa dart uncontrollably when starlted which is almost all the time. you will need at least a 6' tank when the fronts hit about 6" otherwise they will slam into the glass. NO SHARP POINTS IN YOUR TANK! that goes for the rock as well.
