I was wondering, Ive never kept one, are these guys capable living with smaller meaner africans? How about larger central american cichlids such as a jag or a midas? And last question, are frontosa the largest african cichlids?

Smaller Africans are notorious for nipping fins. Fronts are well known for nuchal humps and long flowing fins. You will notice that your fronts will not have super long fins.
I keep fronts and they do well with venustus and haplochromisi species. Any other form or cichlid would be a negative to keep with a frontosa. They do well with Bala sharks as well. They are a great fish and they do get fairly large maxing out at around 16"

You need to split the difference in PH, between Africans and CA/SA cichlids. Just make sure the PH is stable.
Fronts are wimpy. They are actually only aggressive to other Fronts that are smaller. On rare occasions they will lip lock with CA/SA fish. Larger preds that are relatively peaceful will make great tankmates. Over aggressive CA/SA fish will torment a front, sometimes to death.
I mix them, most people don't.

Any idea why they cost so damn much?SG1, Boulengerochromis microlepis, aka emperor cichlids, are the biggest african cichlids. They, along with frontosas, come from the same lake.
And from what I remember, frontosas are mouth brooders. Females can carry a limited amount of eggs, which causes them to be more pricey. You might want to post this in the african cichlid section also.

Frontosa's only have spawns ranging in the number of 12-24. It also takes 3-4 years for a female Frontosa to be able to mouthbrood. This is why the price is so high and why breeding pairs of Front's sell for as much as a few hundred dollars. Sometimes more.
Frontosa's look best in a colony of 9 or more with other fish such as Synodontis (Cuckoo cats are great).
