frontosas.. gravel or sand?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had some in a tank with gravel. I didnt care for it too much and they hid all the time. I moved then into a tank with pool filter sand and they are constantly sifting and re-arranging the sand. They also seem to be growing faster. (not to mention they hide a lot less)

That being said, I vote for sand (coarse sand if possible.)

I have had them in both and out of the two I prefered sand and I think they did to. When they were in the gravel they really didn't do much. But when I put them in a tank with sand they were alot more acitve and would excavate and sift through the sand and I found that to be fun and interesting to watch, so I say sand. Plus that is what they have in the wild.

I also think sand is better, I had a few in sand and a few in gravel they seemed to enjoy the sand more =) Plus I think sand makes it look alot nicer and alot more naturual then gravel does o__o

I would also recommend using sand. I had a breeding colony of frontosa in a tank with gravel and the females would sometimes pick up grains of gravel with eggs. After 3 weeks I would strip the females to find 2-3 eggs max and gravel that had destroyed the eggs.

Sand. I have one in my gravel tank and it is always rearranging the gravel, and it is a lot harder to do that than with the sand. My front will hopefully go into a sand tank as soon as I move into my new house.

I've never used sand in my tanks but after reading all those posts I'm thinking I might want to set up my 150 with sand since that's my future fronts home. I was wondering though how do you clean the sand? I use a python No-Spill to gravel vac all my other tanks but how do you clean the sand? I know my dad used to use blasting sand in his tanks years ago b/c it's heavier but still unsure how to clean it. . .
