It shouldnt suck up your sand unless you have the icky sand. I bought this one sand from a lfs that was horrible and started floating and would get sucked up when I cleaned it, but then I got a fine sand (almost felt like beach sand - but it wasnt) and that stuff is nice doesnt get sucked up in cyphon or ne thing so I clean like I would gravel.
