Frozen California Blackworms - My first order!

Hello everyone!

Just got my first order of frozen blackworms from Dan over at aquatic foods about 10 minutes ago and wanted to share myy toughts with you so far.

First, shipping, comunication, and follow-up...phenomenal as usual (I have ordered live worms from Dan for about 10 years now), box got here on time and the contents were frozen as frozen can be!

I must confess that I over ordered, this is a lot of worms and even with my friend Bob taking half of them, my freezer is still full! My half consists of 10 individual zip bags with 2 trays of frozen worms in each, these worms are densily packed in the trays and with not a lot of water at all! A little bit of worms is enough to feed a lot of fish!!!

So I took a bit and couldn't resist feeding my fish right away...what can I say I was excited!

Well they took to it like moths to light! They went nuts over it and ate it up! My only fault was over feeding, I was not aware how much a little bit was, it was a lot! Good thing they like it since I have a freezer full of them!

I let a little thaw out and what I saw was worms that look like live worms and smell like fresh live blackworms, if you have ever kept them, you know what I mean! My point is that this smelled right and looked right so I am very happy with it!

A bonus of these will be for the ray keepers, first thing that poped in my mind was when I kept them live worms were the best thing to feed them since they landed on the bottom and were them eaten by the rays. With this frozen food one will be able to do the same without the need to care for live worms!

Currently I have 8 breeding pairs of discus, 13 wild fish, and 8 assorted Asian discus, all receiving this food as part of their diet.

Time will tell how the fish react, etc. with more people buying these I am sure more feedback will be made available but I am sold!!!! Thanks Dan for another great alternative to feeding my fish!

Right now you need to order minimum 11 pounds which is a bit over $100 with fedex. As soon as I get a paycheck when school starts I will be putting in my order. Dan said that he will be offering smaller amounts and deals for simplydiscus members so keep an eye out over there. The problem is with any frozen food you need a certain mass to maintain the integrity of the frozen block. btw he flash freezes the worms in a fruit processing plant and even irradiates them.

hey Rod,
ever try the freeze dried blackworms? I get mine from aquaticsuppliers ( a simplydiscus sponsor). my wilds go crazy for them and it seem they would be easier to store than frozen. don't know what the difference in price is, as the freeze dried is a bit pricey.

I do as well, the advantages of this product is obviously price and the flash freezing process that Dan is using should maintain the nutritional values better (this is my input, not Dan's but I work in the food industry and know very well what process he is using). The other advantage is that this will sink so bottom feeders and picky water collum eaters have a shot at the worms before all the top eaters get at them.

Cost benefit on these is phenomenal! I ordered the larger amount and it cost me $180 deliverd to my door, that is 20 packs with 2 trays in each! That is a lot of food so splitting it with friends makes sense since you will have food for a long time! I told Dan that this new product is a game changer for him, all the benefits or live black worms, with very little hassle! Same feed response, smae quality, and none of the hassles!
