Frozen food exclusively...

I'm of the belief that a good varied diet is best for proper nutrition and growth rate. I feed all my cichlids quality pellets daily (NLS and Omega one) as well as a good flake and some waffers as well, then they get frozen food once per week as a treat.

I lost my Jaguar just last year and I truly believe that is was because of my own fault trying to feed him too much frozen meaty food to get him to grow faster. I started feeding him shrimp 3 times per week and after awhile he developed some really weird digestive issue where he started spitting up this brown crazy looking fluffy stuff. He stopped eating and lasted about 3 weeks till he died :( I can't say because I'm not fish doctor but I believe it had something to do with too much undigested meaty food in his stomach that turned into some sort of infection/fungus. So every since then I make sure I cut back on frozen foods and only feed them that once per week as a treat now.

What kind of frozen shrimp?

Cool beans. What about high quality live vs pellets?
I find most live foods to be too much of a hassle and more trouble than it is worth, probably the only live that I don't mind using is earthworms and the like.

Some contend that the store bought shrimp contains too much salt for our fishes.

no i dont know of any official studies or anything. ive just read it multiple times on this and other forums. i know plenty of people feed their cichlids shellfish and whatnot but it stands to reason, for me at least, that these foods are not what the fish eats in its natural habitat.

That's pretty much why I try to stick with freshwater fillet for my fish...namely,tilapia.When I kept sharks and other saltwater carnivores I gave them plenty of squid scallop for obvious reasons.

If you are feeding peas for "fiber content", I would personally stick with insects and crustaceans like freeze dried krill.
Ok cool, I feed dried krill already
