Frozen

For some of my marine rays, I used to make frozen cubes of fish juice and water. Outside of a normal feeding time, I would toss in a couple of blocks and let them 'play' with them. Many of the rays would push them around for awhile. It gave them something stimulating to due for awhile. The long term benefits of giving rays things that mentally challenge them have been proven as healthier and more active rays. Another way to change up their routine is put the food into a small hard plastic ball (like a gerbil or hamster ball) where they have to push it around to knock the food out.

So you are saying it is ok to feed frozen?

A lot of people worry about the ice factor. From my experience, ice itself isn't something that will negatively impact the rays.

I thaw all food over night in the refrigerator. Slow thawing is better to maintain the nutritional value of the food item being offered. Most people over feed rays, so worrying about the right amount of nutrition per food item isn't really something they concern themselves with.

Hi Matt, hope you are well. Now i really like that idea!! I'm allways up for giving the rays variety. After all it's a hell of a long life to spend inside a glass box! I am going to do this and get a small 'Kong'. These are sold in the UK for dogs. You fill them up with treats and let them spend and hour or so getting the contents out. I could fill one with frozen mussel etc and let them kick it about. Be better than kicking big stone boulders about. I have had to remove three stones over the past year, each time the stones are getting bigger as the rays grow. The last one i took out last week was bigger than my fist. I heard one of the rays smasshing it against the side of the tank, not good in a glass tank!

Instead of throwing the food in the microwave why don't you just grab some tank water and put the food in...thaw it and throw it in? I usually do that with regular fish

I throw all my food into my net and let the tank water thaw it, then once its ready I throw it in, most of the time fully thawed, sometimes a bit frozen in the center, does not take very long for the tank to heat it up.

Did tested this and its true that before it hits the bottom its already defrosted. Only prob i have on a fish eating ice is my poor mans arowana as he intercepts the food as it hits the water. Well i think he is tough enough to handle it as he is still alive.

I feed my dat pulcher frozen small this doesn't have anytime to defrost as soon as it hits the water it's gone

He eats about 10 x 5" fish per feed everyday hasn't affected him at all

We get brain freeze if we drink drinks that are to cold it doesn't stop us going back for more and it doesn't kill us

Long term my fish are old now and have always been fed this way so it can't be that harmful
