FRT and Rays?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have heard both sides, for some it has worked for others it hasnt. kinda one of those things that if u wanna try it. might work. might not. id be to scared to try it but thats me. the worry for me would be the frt nipping the rays or something

They had one at a LFS here, they kept it with bleeding heart tetras.

It's a tough go. I've had mine for about a year and a half with my rays now and if I don't feed it enough it will nip at the rays tails. It's also taken out 2 of my tats. Longterm I don't really see this working out but I'll keep going till I'm a little more concerned

T1 had one in with his but I THINK he got rid of it.

I have heard of them biting and even killing rays but I have also seen larger tanks with them in.

I expect if it is going to work you probably need 600+(ish)gals...or large footprint... and keep all concerned well fed, any less and you MAY need to make sure you have a quick way to separate them and a long term alternative solution.

For me the Rays are the No.1 priority so I would not add anything that could harm them, other people add Rays to a "monster community" where the Ray is not the number 1 focus for them.

I wanted to try this mix for years but though it was to much of a risk in my old tank which was 350 gal

As soon as I set up the new tank 1000 gal I done the mix and it worked fine for the 3 months I had mine

I sold mine not because of problem I just wanted to focus more on the rays again

If you look for a female FRT which I done I think you stand a better chance of it working as males seam to be more agro

You also need a big tank so they can get out of each others way if needed I think 600 gal + would be a good start

The main reason I got rid of mine was FRT mess up the tank water bad which is not a good thing with rays

My FRT did used to go over the top of the rays and sniff near the eyes gills which used to scare the rays but they got used to it after a few days

FRT also eat mainly veg when small but start eating meat as they get bigger you also stand a better chance of it working if you don't let the FRT eat meat as I have also been told if the FRT starts to eat meat like prawns silver side mussel it will also make it more aggressive so mine only use to eat hikari algae wafers
