Well, I actually considered getting out of the hobby until I saw ming's FRT. So I figure I get a 75/90g and get an FRT. My question is, what else could I keep with it? I was thinking dats?

FRTs are best kept by themselves as they have a specific requirement than most fish, produce a lot of waste and they have the tendency to nip on fish.

hmmmmmm. Tough call on my hands now. I may get a ray and grow him out. When they outgrow the tank, I could bring them to work and throw them in the indoor pond eh? Not exactly responsible, but lmao.

There are countless posts of FRTs "going bad" and attacking their tankmates. I have 4 and each one has hunted fish once they hit a year to a year and a half old. At 2 years old (some less) they've even attacked each other. Now, they each have their own tank until they hit breeding age. Then, I'll recombine them, with dividers, until I see anything resembling pre-breeding behavior.

Ive mixed frts with fish with mixed results. They totally ignored a delhezi
but attacked a arowana. Ive also mixed two frts with minimal fighting.

It could go either way . . you can experiment if the fish are expendable ..
neo has had his frt with other fish for several years now with no problems.
Just be ready for the worst if you want to try.

The risk isn't worth it IMO. I had 2 FRTs that were peaceful for 2 years go head to head with each other. One FRT tore most of the lower jaw off the other. I had to put that turtle down. Pretty expensive and needless experiment.

A small female yearling busted her fish-killing cherry on an australian lungfish much larger than herself. Another expensive experiment.

Yeah.. Thats why i only mix it with fish that are expendable. I also hate the damage that frts do to each other. The shell bites. take a long time to go away.

At a minimum, or at least for a few years, what size tank would you recommend for a FRT. I figure I might as well add dither fish and stuff to make the tank look full. Maybe a bunch of different live bearers with plenty of plant cover?

Yeah , they would be the occasional feeders . Their growth rate is not that rapid.
If you got one at 5 inches, you could house it in a 75G for 1-2 years.
