NICE!! Glad you were finally able to get you one!! They are great thats for sure! Love mine! Yours looks a little skinny though, best beef it up as quickly as possible. One thing that helps is puttin cuttlefish bone in the tank...it will sink right to the bottom, and the FRT will gnaw on it whenever it wants. A great way to supply them with calcium easily! ;)

Would this cuttlebone gimmick work with all water turtles,?

yes but with the fish she's with i don't think she will be able to hurt anyone...

plus 3 hours passed and still not even a sign of agrassion... :D

how do you tell if it's a male or a female?

i had not fead it yet, but it was eating chicken and turky with the previous owner, but i'm gonna give her fruit, and dry food for earth turtles i heard it was good for them...

any advice?

Ummmm advice?

Given that its still settling in theres def. still a possibility that it might go after your fish, especially since its former main diet seems to have been protein. Your bichir will probably be the first to get bitten if it gets that urge. The former diet of chicken and turkey is NOT advisable since people seem to link it to shell curl. Try to limit its protein intake.

FRT's also prefer high ph and brackish water. Not saying that it must be brackish but to helps to add alittle salt to the water.

Number one main issue with your FRT should be fungus infection. Be sure to keep an eye out for any infections especially around the nostril area. Another thing to check is its eyes, if its coudly or clear.

It terms of sexing your frt, heres a great link to tell....

Be warned the pictures are graphic!

Hope this helped....

Nice turtle! I would like to own one.

About the protein, it should be aight after they reach the 6 to 8" range...as thats when they start needing it more. Still a good idea to limit it, but its also a great idea to include it. Herbs LOVES brusselsprouts (feed in moderation as they can make them gassy... ), fresh figs, plums, kiwi, banana, romane lettuce, java fern *sigh* , algae wafers, ghost shrimp, cocktail shrimp, papaya, yams, grapefruit, corn, peas, green beans, okra (yucky...lol), and her all time FAVORITE food, catfish fillets cut up!! Main thing is to vary the diet as much as possible! ;)

The cuttlefish bone won't sink right away, as its pretty porus. I had to stick TWO forks in the one i have with Herbert now. About an hour or so later it was sitting quite nicely upon the bottom of the tank! ;)

BTW...I've got Herbs tank at 8.4 pH and 300 ppm Alkalinity...lol. Add salt every other water change as well...;).
