PLEASE explain to me what hard water has to do with high nitrate......

Maybe all the people out there that keep Marbles without breeding them, or people that have had stillborn pups or pups that didn't make it, have issues with thier water too????

Maybe I should pass my fish off to those that can "properly" care for them. :(

I am just saying that your WATER must be what causes you constant problems... There are not very many people that i know that have the amount of mature marbles as you.. You would think that with the size tanks you have you woudl be producing pups several times a year.

I just see the effort you have put in to creating your marble breeding program, and your armatus love, and you keep struggling with water issues. Nitrates, hard water, ph.. I just think that POSSIBLY your issues could be related to your water. Not sure how... but now you realized that your ph is as high as it is.. Like you told me, there has to be a reason..

I am not saying that nitrates, and hard water even have anything to do with each other, but obviously your water has issues... Great filters, great water change maintence..etc but you can't help bad water, what do you have to loose trying RO, besides the money involved.

If everyone that has hard water did that a lot of us would be out of the hobby. Your rays are fine except the trouble with breeding, correct? Obviously you're able to keep them. You might have to wait on breeding them but you can certainly keep them.

As for the Armatus, you might just have to wait until you can get the RO system. There are several fish I'd love to have but I can't because I'm jobless and can't afford the things I would need for them.

You could call it trouble with breeding, or just call it the same exact luck that a majority of Marble owners have (hard to get to breed). Yes the rays seem fine. Despite the 1st miscarriage of 2 still borns, and the second litter having 2 stillborn, and 3 more passing over the next few weeks, I did have one make it and she's doing great and inspires me everyday. :headbang2

I know EXACTLY what you mean about the jobless thing. I'm in the same boat. Unemployed and needing an expensive RO system, in an economy that makes selling rays to raise funds VERY difficult. I guess this is where improvise, adapt, modify, overcome plays an important part in keeping rays..... ;)

Motoros breed like rabbits. Marbles don't. I know plenty of people keeping Marbles in perfect conditions and they don't breed regularly like plain Motoros do. There's people keeping Marbles and Motoros and have confirmed that the Marbles simply do not breed as often. JimR produced one of the larger amounts of pups we've seen in a while. His 2nd biggest female produced ONCE despite having her for years and living next to a female that produced much more frequently. Just depends on the animals.

I do have a lot of mature proven females. I also have a bunch of small males. I need some large males, and until I find some I may be S.O.L. Some believe that if the female is much larger then a male it is going to be very difficult if not impossible for the male to breed with her. Problem I have is trying to find large males without getting taken advantage of since I have so much on the line with this lil project, and people see that.

There's so many factors out there that all you can do is eliminate possibilities. I understand now that I have to eliminate water, despite people saying it's fine to keep them in hard water. But when people tell me thier water is like mine then I assume it's not the cause.

It's always been a serious problem in the ray world to be able to pick and choose which advise is good and which isn't cause opinion and fact get mixed up.

I understand what you're saying though, and I appreciate where you're going with it Keepinfish.

Like I've always said, time will tell..... Gonna get it figured out someday or "Out of Hobby sale" trying.....

by hard water i meant a pH of 8.0 and ridiculously high kh and gh lol, i dont touch my water, i used to but not anymore too much hassle, my discus have laid eggs once in my water, but otherwise they dont, back when i had just discus they used to more often but i dont want to raise discus so that didnt affect me.

i should also mention that my discus laid their eggs more often in a species only tank, now that i've mixed i think its easy to assume they wont as much.

Move to Michigan lol

Northern water is crap. If I'm going anywhere it's gonna be south.

I've got a better idea! How bout if you just buy my Marbles and tanks to put them in so they can be taken care of properly and eventually breed. That way I could use that money to get a house that has a garage with a lift so I can stick to what I'm good at. :D
