Fry sucked into filter intake

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is not possible for me to have a fry tank at the moment. Will nylons help without reducing the flow? Also, I am not too familiar with how sponge filters work. Enlighten me.

sponge filters are just sponges with air flowing through them to create a water flow (sort of like a big bubble wand). Because of the huge surface area created by the pores, it allows a lot of bacteria to colonize it, resulting in a lot of biological filtration. And since it is just like a gentle airstone, there is no danger of the babies getting sucked in

You should make a custom sponge cover for your existing filter. Get a big block sponge like the kind that go in the bottom of a wet/dry filter. Go at it with a pair of scissors until it fits over your intake. It also acts as a prefilter. You can take it off and rinse it very easily. PRESTO!! No more sucked up fry.

Seriously. A two minute fix at the most. No need for a fry tank, or reducing flow, or a whole sponge filter.

If you want it to look really good a trick is to freeze the sponge and then use a saw on the block of ice containing the sponge. You can even drill a hole for the intake with a wood bit. A lot easier to cut than with scissors.

I use prefilters on all my canisters as it really cuts down on maintenance.

you almost got it right. When using nylons from your wife or girlfriend make sure they are "sheer" which means thin and the flow of the filter will be better.

Thanks everyone!
