I have a small 10 g fry tank and I just can't get it to fishless cycle. Ammonia levels turn my api test bright green. I have had it for 4 months and have added used filters to try and speed up the process. I have added small amounts of food as a catalyst. I have already lost two sets of fry because I can't use it. What do I need to do to get this tank to cycle.

i have moss in there (which I grow to sell to my LFS) but add some substrate and plants to see it it helps. thx

When I set up a quarantine or hospital tank, I don't ever cycle the tank. I just add water, get it up to temp, and add a filter with a good amount of bio media (in my case, ceramic rings) from an established tank. This is the reason I also have much, much more bio media, in all my filters, than I really need.

If you plan to raise your frys, you may want to add sponge filters to your established tanks to establish bb colonies. So, when you have frys, all you have to do is move the frys and sponge into the grow-out tank.......no cycling needed

yeah I have a sponge filter in there but not helping. I will try some ceramic rings.... thanks
Was this sponge filter from an established tank? If yes, how long has it been in the established tank?

It takes about a month for bb to colonize a new media, so just adding an "unseeded" sponge will do you no good.
I suppose the used filters you are adding is simply not housing enough bb to utilize the amount of ammonia present

once ammonia is present I expect bb to be established after 3 months or so. I got to say i am scratching my head. I just wonder if I just start the whole process again

Its difficult to say what went wrong based upon reading words off an internet forum.

Since you already have a sponge filter, just run it in one of your established tanks for a couple of months. After that, all you need to do is move it into the fry tank when you're frys are ready to be separated. No need to cycle anything.
