Not here to be a party pooper but when you going collecting, it does not mean you will catch everything you could dream of. It can be a hit & miss depending on timing, location & who is actually catching the fishes.
Getting fish back is not that easy & expect to pay a lot of $ to get them back & you can expect to lose a lot of money in DOAs with no guarantee. To get a good rate you will need to bring back 50-100 boxes under one order! So it could cost $5000. or more in shipping cost.
Make sure you have a good customs agent.

Its beautiful down there & Peaceful. I plan on going back next year to collect but may not even bring fish back & I have a license & a lot of tanks with a hatchery & two stores.

Professor not sure If you advised that anyone goes that they need to get shots etc.. before going down & when they get back.
Plan well ahead. Not sure if you are supplying equipment, coolers etc.

Have fun who ever goes its experience of a life time.

me Dave

Shots when they get back????
never heard this before and I have been going for years.....50-100 boxes???? wow, seems to me you have tons of DOA's... sure some fish have high mortalities but they tend to me the more rare things. I work with guys who have YEARS in the fish exporting business. The fish are pretreated before shipping.

Oh well......

think malaria pills took before & after. no shots after.
I did not use my own customs agent but used the tours because they have been doing it for about 15 years or more.
Like the Jag cats someone mentioned, I bought at the exporters along with 18 boxes these came in DOA. Some stuff fared well in the boxes for 4+ days & some did not. I should of had about 25 boxes. Some were not shipped or held because considered food fish?
There is Exporter/ importers etc.. been doing for years so they have it more down to a science. It can cost less for me to buy from my importers then direct.
The trip was great but getting fish back was the most stress full & costly to me. I Could not get the cost of getting fishes back until they were shipped back until knowing how many boxes were going out? 25 boxes were sent to me including everyone else"s that I had to reship what was still alive or what I could nurse back .
After sticker shock I talked to one my importers I have been dealing with for a long time that gets stuff from Brazil, Peru, etc & said to get the best rate on shipping cost it was over 50 boxes typically.
I just chimed in case some had expectations of bringing back a lot of big stuff etc.. I know I was looking for a young pair of Tiger rays & did not catch any. Caught tons of Apistos though. :)

oh well

Four days in shipment? I am surprised anything made it. All fish we catch during the week will be houses either in aquaria or in the farms of the Institute I am raising money for.

Reality is always different from expectations and I will be totally honest and upfront with everyone. That is why I have stated that in the 6 years I have been doing research in in the Amazon (Colombia and Peru) I have NEVER caught stingrays at all and that if you are shipping to California, I will not send any fish that are illegal in California (piranha, stingrays, etc.).

I am doing this to help the new research institute and I will make Zero off this. I will already be in Iquitos (will get there in early September and won't leave until November) to conduct my own research (I am doing genetic work on discus and angelfish) and thought others would enjoy going on a collecting trip.

Dave, feel free to contact me at my e-mail if you have any questions......

He is always bringing fish from peru to our club. the people he is working with know what they are doing. he knows what he is doing. if i had the extra money i would already have dropped it off to him.

cant wait to see the updates from the research institute when you get back.

fish are caught with large seines....these can be as log as 50 feet long and about 6 feet high
