This fish needs a minimum of 55g or larger as it gets quite large. You can remove the gravel for sand & must use sand to make it a marine tank. Do a search on them at my forum--there are a few keeping this species there.

not sure what type of filtration you're using

but you can slowly make the switch to sand by removing 25% of the gravel and replacing it with sand every week or so.

just from the looks of your pictures, i would not change it all at once.

I know they are a high end BW to Marine, but there was a guy a couple of months back that had his for 2 years or more in purely fresh water. I questioned him about it and he said it has never been in salt since he has head him. It was currently at six inches when he was selling it.
Just a thought. I also have seen several reports that they never live to a year, which would contradict the seller also.

By the way it is a very nice looking puffer, I almost picked one up at one of the lfs's in my area. They were selling them for 24.99. They called it a saddle back puffer.

I think the real trick to keeping these guys is the cooler water.

Thanks for all the input guys. I think you're right about the cold water because he almost looked gray when I got him and after a couple weeks of feeding him well and having him in colder water he looked great. I think I will slowly change out all the rocks. Don't I have to put some sort of micro fiber over the under gravel filter before I pour sand on top to stop it from just going through the filter? I don't really have any experience with sand. 24.99 is a lot for a fugu Shadow Strider. I've seen them at a few shops around here and never for more than 10 dollars. How big was it?

Couldn't have been more than 2.5 inches. I didn't get one anywho. Things are always cheaper out there on the coast.:( I'll stick with my Fahaka and patiently wait it out for a Pustulatus

yeah if you're running a filter that uses an impeller, you'll want to turn it off for a few minutes while you add the sand

and make sure the intake for your filter is at least a few inches off the sand

if you get sand, rinse - rinse - rinse...dont just put it in the tank, give it a meticulous rinsing
