Full grown payaras size?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Armatus - 24+ inches but seems to rarely top 24 inches, grows extremely fast, usually topping 12+ inches in a year.
Tatauaia - 18 inches is reported max size but seems they rarely exceed 12-14 inches in home aquaria, relatively slow growth after 8-10 inches
Scomberoides - 16 inches is usually max reported size (usually only in zoos and other public aquariums), tend to die off after the first year or after 12 inches.

The sticky has most of this information.

Tats or Scomb yes, Armatus no. They get too large and will likely be too aggressive.

That is what I was thinking. Think some Silver dollars would be good as some dithers? And are there any cool bottom dwellers that I could put with them?

My payaras were always very dedicated to eating my dollars. Dollars are natural prey items for payaras. Make sure you get the dollars to a decent size before you introduce your payaras so that they have a chance of surviving. Also, ensure your dollars have hiding places.

Tats would be perfect for you. They have the same body plan as an armatus with arguably better coloring, but they top out at 18" and grow very slowly.
