Full grown payaras size?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Alright a LFS by me has a bunch of really nice good sized dollars and some tinfoil barbs that ive never seen before. The other LFS I go to has a payara in I have to get a pic to put on here for an I.D. but other then that one payara I have NEVER seen one anywhere close to me

If you can give us a price we can more than likely guess what it is. Scombs usually go for around 20 when they show up at a LFS. Tats usually 40-70, and Armatus can be all over the map. Chances are though it's a Scomberoides. Get us a pic and we should be able to get you an ID though.

Triple all your prices and you're in the ballpark lol

Jeez chicx is that how much they are asking around your area? I've never seen scombs in my area for more than 25. I've only seen Tats once in the 6-7 inch range going for 70. I do remember them going for quite a bit more, up to atleast about 160 when they were quite a bit rarer than Armatus. I will say though I have seen Armatus everywhere from 80-250.

I do see Aquascape had Scombs listed for 45-125 but that seemed quite a bit high.

Well how big are we talking about? Most of the ones I see are 6-8" and priced accordingly; for that size the prices are as I quoted. Regardless of where they are lol.

For small ones, like2-3 inches, I agree with the prices you posted.

I was suggesting prices for all 2-3 inch fish, but yes I would have to agree if we are suggesting applicable prices for 6-8 inches then you are definitely right and you can be looking at 2-3 times what my suggested prices were.

This one was atleast 5-7 inches he wasn't looking to great thought But I think the price was 89.99

Armatus - 24+ inches but seems to rarely top 24 inches, grows extremely fast, usually topping 12+ inches in a year.
Tatauaia - 18 inches is reported max size but seems they rarely exceed 12-14 inches in home aquaria, relatively slow growth after 8-10 inches
Scomberoides - 16 inches is usually max reported size (usually only in zoos and other public aquariums), tend to die off after the first year or after 12 inches.

The sticky has most of this information.

Bingo! dont feed them frozen fish food like silverside. I lost both of my armatus after they got off of live foods and strated eating silverside. Keep your feeders healthy.

I've seen one Armatus in an LFS in FL, he was about 12" and $500. I guess since nobody gets Armatus anywhere here, they like to over-price their fish. Apparently they were shipping him to somebody, but the buyer backed off, they were stuck with a foot long Armatus in a 30g holding tank.

I really do believe this to be the key to keeping healthy payara and when I do finally get one it will be kept on live. Although it is expensive I feel like many here will agree that they simply aren't getting something they need when we feed prepared foods or pellets. DB junkie will also probably tell you he feels the same as he hypothesizes this because his were often the first to be weened off live in favor of prepared foods and was often the first to pass.

Some of the larger specimens we have seen 24" and 27"+ specimens are often only seen in asia where mostly these fish have only been kept on feeders and goldfish.

Like I said previously Armatus seem to be a bit of a wild card, there are cases of people getting them much cheaper whether being because they come in through shipments of Scomb or Tats and are mistaken, or simply because the store has no idea what they have. However like the one locally to you have been seen for exorbitant amounts of money.

Yep, to this day I've never seen another Armatus, and that was two years ago. Only seen one tank full of Tats as well, plenty of Scombs though.
