Female's spot tend to disappear when they start to mature. So usually big Bowfins with the spot is male.I think the females have a yellow ring around the black.
Does not matter what size the tank is or how many fish in there in a tank. We still take fish out of their natural habitat which no tank can be compare. That is also inhumane. Know about that before you type here.

There's a difference in taking a fish from it's natural habitat and providing it with an enviroment, that to the best of your ability is suitable, and to what you are doing.
