Nice setup, great looking cichla. How many gallon is this setup?

Thanks! It's only 180 gallons but I've been told it looks much larger.

thats looks really good-very natural looking

Thanks! I much prefer natural over pink gravel and sunken pirate chests. I think the fish prefer it as well.

very nice. i like the leave look

The fish seem to like it as well. I was watching the pikes hunt goldfish in them yesterday. Pretty amazing to watch them stalk.

Yea, very cool. How do the motoros fare in the leaves?

The motoros seem indifferent. They would rather lay on top of them than bury themselves. Oddly enough, I catch the rays eating the leaves occasionaly. Not a lot but they definitely munch on them.

[QUOTEHawkfish3.0]I'm very curious, how do the pikes and rays get along? I wanted to get some rays for my 220g, but was advised not to when I posted a thread about it. A member told me that pikes like to kill rays. I've kept pikes for some time, but I'm new to rays. Yours seem to be fine, true?[/QUOTE]

The pikes definitely pick at the rays from time to time. It's not bad but every once in a while I'll see a ray jump through the water quickly and notice that it's disc is nipped. It only seems to happen when the ray wanders under the pikes' log though. If the stupid rays would stay out from under there it wouldn't be a problem.

I do suspect that once the pikes get bigger they will be a problem. Then again, that will be with all the fish and not just the rays!!

Are those real leaves? Silk? That's really original. Nice job....

They are real oak leaves.

I believe the leaves are oak (from a previous thread). That setup turned out really great.

You are correct. Thanks for the compliment!

let us know what those leaves are!! looks sweet

Again, they are oak leaves. Oak leaves are suposedly thicker and more acidic than other leaves. They last longer without breaking down and help to acidify the water.

I'm wanting to do a smaller tank and put a vampire tetra or two in it. I think it would look pretty cool.

Thanks Dom. I knew you would appreciate it. ;)

Are those rays, how are they doing with the leaves? Do they glide under them, over?

Mostly over although they do get down in them and make quite the mess occasionaly. As mentioned earlier, they like to munch on them as well. Who'd have thunk it?? :grinno:

thats a great looking tank and the leaves make it look super natural!

Question on the oak leaves, does their decomposing pose additional problems like fungus or clogging filter intakes? How long do they last before you have to start netting the leaves out?

...Great looking tank ! More closeups!
