Aren't stinkpots almost fully aquatic. I have heard many stories of stinkpot owners who say they never go onto the basking area.

I have heard that they don't bask, but mine does at least once a day so I think its a case by cases basis.

i have a pair of musk/stinkpot turtles with my south american cichlids stay in the water 99% of the time and have never in the 3yrs of owning them killed a fish good at cleaning up left over food though

Fuly, fully aquatic, the FRT male, as said.

Matas come out of the water now and again,

If ur looking for a turtle to stay in the water 100% of the time, ur outta luck, All aquatic turtles need some kind of dry land to lay eggs and bask. Even sea turtles come out of the water.

Turtles and fish together, I would strongly recomend against it. Turtles eat fish. I've tried it a couple times with my RES and they always end up full of fish.

As for a list of aquatic turtles, this site is the best place to find turtles and tortoises of any species:

Sternotherus odoratus Are a very good choice for this They are small, safe with most medium sized fish and almost completely aquatic. Though if you go kayaking or canoeing in their native range you can find them basking so it is a good idea to give them a basking spot. I've only ever noticed them basking when they have a heavy load of leeches though, I think they do it to get rid of them. As stated above, they are very good at cleaning up after messy eaters too.

In a perfect world that would be true........However, when a Female holds them too long because she's wired to lay Eggs in suitable nesting substrate, you then get to deal with a bound up Turtle........You then have a 70/30 chance of killing the thing through ruptured ovaducts, septocemia, and a myriad of other Reproductive tract problems......
x2, true for all turtles.

So how come my lfs is so sure that the Florida soft-shell they have with some cichlids doesn't need a basking spot? Well that turtle die if it doesn't have one?

Very possible, Soft Shells are avid baskers, mine bask close to 4-5 hours a day

If by ''fully aquatic'' you mean a turtle that doesn't bask, you're nearly out of luck. FRT are not baskers, but all other mentioned turtles are, however infrequently. I can supply pictures of muds, musks, common snappers, ally snappers, and softshells basking in captivity. In all cases it's dependent on the individual turtle.
