Hey all. I’m getting my fish room put together and have a nice rimless 40 gallon breeder that is like to use for some sort of smaller cichlid type. Looking for something that is showy but also challenging to breed. I’ll set it up as a natural biotope tank as well.
Throw me your ideas!!

I already have geo red heads and altifrons FYI.

With that size tank, South American dwarf cichlids like Rams (Mikrgeophagus ramirezi) or any from the genus Apistogramma (13 species) come to mind, and are readily available.
There are a few other dwarf type such as Dicrossus (5 species), or Teleocichla (8 species, of rheophillic cichlids, that require a stronger current in the tank than many aquarists ar able to provide), and these may be harder to find.

Nanochromis Splendens or similar. You could house a couple of pairs in a 40.

Oh wow ya I really like those. Those are definitely an option
They are pretty little fishes. I have a male and 2 females. The females are in separate tanks. I plan to move the male back and forth between them unless I can find another unrelated male. They are a little spendy though. I have been able to trade for mine.

Dwarf Sumbu Compressiceps Cichlid (Altolamprologus compressiceps "Sumbu"). Sand City Cichlids has F1s.
