So a couple days ago I had an entire tank die off in a fairly quick manner and I believe I have found the culprit. I have a large chunk of driftwood that floats in the top of my tank and has been for 2 months. When I bought this tank it came with the wood and was silicone to the glass for who knows how long then put in my garage for a couple months while I was trying to set it up. Now that it is in the tank there are patches of ball like fuzz as well as some stringy. It has been like this way before any algae was on the glass which leads me to believe that this wood has some sort of fungus. I talked to my lfs and they said to empty the tank pitch the wood, I’ll be burning it with rage, and salt for a few days. Do you think this should work, and is there any other thing you would do? I also have pothos vines he said I should just be able to rinse off w/ tap water and they should be fine as well, do you all agree or should they be pitched. I’m leaning towards when in doubt pitch it out.

Thanks

Most wood fungus's at bit in water, if fact most of the old wood in my tanks has fungus on it, and no problem.

It could have absorbed something toxic in the garage, but should have killed the fish immediately.

I also forgot to mention that the wood is not as dense as my other piece in another tank that has never had any kind of fungus. It kinda flakes apart when you touch it then the small pieces will sink. Don’t know if this makes much of a difference but who knows. It is starting to look like I am just not going to be able to figure out what happened to this tank which I have been told is not uncommon.

I had this happen but the fungus was white and blue. Fish that died also had fungus on them? Happened fast!

Did you find the wood outside ? Could have toxins from man made chemicals it absorbed when it was alive or even when dead. Did you clean it properly ? Maybe get a UV filter ?

I bought the tank on craigslist and it came with the wood. The tank was running with fish and wood but it didn’t seem as brittle as it is in my tank. I am pretty sure I am just going to pitch it. I am trying to get rid of as many variables as possible and this one just seems off. Worst case I lost a nice looking piece of wood, best I saved the lives of more fish I put in this tank.

Here's a closeup of wood from the tank pic I posted above.

there are many soft, hard different types which react differently when waterlogged. I have some that can easily be broken apart after time.
But..
Maybe the person selling the tank etc, on craigslist became discouraged and was selling it after all his/her fish died of some disease, which lay dormant until it was passed on to your fish.
There are some protozoa, and bacterial cycsts that can stay dormant and dried for years waiting for rain.
It is theorized that a small number of ich cysts may do this.

The fish were still alive in his tank, I helped him move them to a new one he was upgrading to. Now I’m thinking I will never know for sure and the most recent idea I have is that something happened the time before I changed the water. This is when the aro stopped eating and when the problems started. I’m thinking either something was wrong with water from the tap or the sand wasn’t agitated as well as I thought it was and there was some gas in it that escaped while the new water was flowing in from the hose. Either way time to start new. I’m getting 2 kels sometime next week and still ordering some stuff from Rapps. I am still on the fence weather to bleach or not. From experience with swimming pools it will all gas out in a couple days so who knows. I’ll probably think about it at work and do whatever tomorrow. I’m sure all my beneficial bio has died in the tank since it has nothing but water for a couple days so we’ll see.
