All,

my oscar has some white cottony substance growing out of what I think is a lost scale from her last water change. so the way I see it water changes cause fungal infections in fish. I’m thinking I should stop doing Wafter changes all together to avoid this in the future. Any downsides?

Would love to get some expert opinions.

Thanks

In all seriousness I’d love to get some help from the community to diagnose and treat. You can see the small spot on her side. It’s been awhile since I changed the media on my filters which I’ll do as soon as I get some new media from Amazon. It’s the only thing I can think of. She’s in a 125 gallon. Weekly 60% wc lives with 5 female convicts nothing foreign has been added in years. She’s acting as crazy as usual. No symptoms.. been healthy for 6 years since I got her as a fry.

Just figured out what caused the stress. i pushed the heat up from 76 to 80.5. Meant to do half that a couple days ago. accounts for her trying to murder me through the glass the last couple days too. :screwy:

Will water changes clear this up?

Don't skimp on your filter maintenance. You could dose with salt and keep water in pristine conditions with consistent proper water changes.

Looks like that may been caused by a scrape or maybe one of the Convicts bit the Oscar.

I’ve always found like oscars to be “fragile” at 75 and “hardy” at 80 assuming everything else was stable/reasonable. Bump up that temp.

I obsess over, water, quality. 60% weekly water changes and the main filter is way overdone for a,125.... it just never any flow or power (2262 classic I think. It’s the one that’s basically a motor on top of a 5 gallon bucket of media). 6 months between maintenance and you open it up and there’s nothing to clean. I’m probably a little overdue though so better safe than sorry.

She loses scales by smacking into rocks chasing the convicts sometimes or while attacking the python hose. First time anything like this happened. Hose convicts wouldn’t dare try anything that bold. They steer clear of her striking range... by a mm... Lol. keeps the oscar entertained.
