My dad is the most difficult person in the world to buy gifts for. Whenever he wants something, he just buys it for himself. This year he's getting a very unique gift!

He's in the process of setting up a 30g cube planted tank. I've helped him decide on a stocking list of 12 cardinal tetras and either an Apistogramma or Bolivian ram male. He might add 3 or so corys down the line.

The kicker is that he lives in KY and I live in FL, and our fish selection is far superior here. So when he comes down here at Thanksgiving he's going to pick out his fish, and his gift will be that I quarantine them for a month here, then bring them up to KY ready for his tank at Christmas. He's pretty good with fish but I work in fish health so I'll save him a lot of headache by acclimating these relatively delicate fish and treating them with preventative medications if need be. He said it'll be the best Christmas present ever! ;)

You're a good daughter and your dad is awesome for keeping Rams. I've raised many cichlids but Rams were by far the hardest for me to keep alive. Tell him that you want him to pay for that 3D background for your new tank for Christmas:). Not an even gift swap but it's worth a try.

Nice gift! Where in Ky do your parents live? I'm in Louisville. And I have a brother in Pensacola who was into fish keeping really big, mainly saltwater, but is moving back here and has to sell off all his stuff :(.

Anyways, congrats on the great gift (and finagling a way to keep some more fish, even if only for a month ;)).

sweet. do a male Apistogramma. :headbang2

My choice would be A. cacatuoides but it's up to him. He likes German Blue rams the best-- I'm trying to steer him towards Bolivian or Gold just because I've heard the GBR are especially delicate. He's already had issues with local tap water there. It's very similar to what ours is here: pH 8, moderately hard. He's going to do half tap and half RO and see if that lowers the values enough for the fish he wants.

Haha you're not too far off, Gruff! My dad is helping me with the cost of the acrylic tank, and that's my Christmas gift! My family definitely understands how fish crazy I am. My mom is just looking forward to having more pets in the house, so I have to do this right and make sure all of the fish do well.

My family lives in Lex, and I went to Bellarmine for undergrad so I know Louisville well and miss it. Do you like Louisville?

I'm sorry about your brother having to sell his stock. I had to do that when I moved this summer, and only brought one fish with me (in my avatar). It was a sad time but I'm slowly getting more tanks again.

You're smart! It's hard for a dad to turn down their daughter. My daughter knows that and takes full advantage of it. Too bad she's in to hamsters and not fish. I would gladly put a 100gal tank in her room for our...I mean "her" enjoyment.

I went through my hamster phase too. I think every girl does. Does she like any fish at all???

I WENT TO BELLARMINE TOO! What year did you graduate? '04 for me, Biology.

I like Louisville a lot. I was raised in Oldham County (up I-71), but I've lived in town since I went to college. I've thought about moving away, but Louisville has everything I need and want, except for high quality MFK worthy fish stores...

Yeah, my bro was going to school, but got turned down for student loans this year, and can't find a job, so he's got to move back. It sucks but that's the way things are right now, you know?

My mom likes having (non-fish) pets in the house, but my dad would rather never have a pet again (even though he's loved every one they've had :screwy:).

They keep asking where the weirdo fish-obsession gene came from in my brother and me :D.
