I am in the process of cycling my 125gl tank. I am running 3 emperor 400 with the carbon filters and fluva biomax in the baskets. I used new gravel that I rinsed in the sink, I also bought 2 pieces on decent sized drift wood and rinse in the sink. I used tap water from the sink, the tank was used for turtles before. Nitrates and nitrites are at 0 and ph is around 7. Water was clear then got cloudy and the cleared up. After a week I did a 25% water change, water got cloudy again and is starting to clear up. Im at the 2nd week of cycling with 10 feeder goldfish.

I get this funny/funky smell from the tank water. What is it? Oh and what you guys suggest that I am doing correct or not correctly. Thanks.

I might be wrong... but isn't it not good to cycle the tank with any gold fish?
as long as theyre quarintined and diseese free.

1. did you clean the tank out with any products beforehand? turtles stink.

2. feeder goldfish or goldfish goldfish? 10 goldfish will create a huge bioload even in a 125 in a short period without frequent water changes if fed regularly. with roseys, you will have less to worry about.

3. anything die in the tank?

4. did you scrub the driftwood after purchase?

5. is your filter media new? double up on the carbon or use a polyfilter bag with rinsed activated carbon.

if you check all those and still come back with a funky smell. i'm almost stumped :)

I did clean the tank several times with a sponge and water, I didn't use cleaning products because I didn't want trace of it in the water.

Yes they are small feeder goldfish

Nothing died

I did not scrub the drift wood, just rinsed with hot water. Had smell before adding drift wood

Media is new

Fish seem to be okay, I also have 2 baby spotted plecos too

The smell is more than likely just your tank trying to cycle. A tank with toxic levels of ammonia smells. Also you did not mention a dechlorinator. I hope that you are using one. Check your ammonia level and see what it is.
