Hello; A number of people are currently without power, including some forum members, and will be for some days. I have lost power for several days in the past. Perhaps a discussion of methods fish keepers can use for future outages can be of some benefit.
Perhaps the type of materials to keep on hand that have proven useful during an extended power loss can be mentioned. Also methods used to avoid complications. For example, some members have reported contamination of tanks when turning on filtration units after an extended time of no power.
For those that can afford to have them, generators are probably the best way to prepare. However many of us are not able to have them, so perhaps we can focus more on other equipment and methods.
Some of us will face this issue again in the future and there may be ways to be ready ahead of time.

Here is ChileRelleno's "Prepping For and Surviving Power Outtages" It's a sticky in the Setup and Filtration Section:

I live in a rural area where power outages happen on a regular basis, and can last hours to days. I find power outages problematic and worrisome. When the power goes out, I immediately add water to the tank to get the bioballs in the wet/dry filter submerged. I also throw in two battery operated air lines. In winter, we bring home a large generator housed in a trailer in case the power is out a long time. This method works great, if we are home. If we are not home, my fish would be in trouble. A power outage could be a catastrophic event on the big system we will be setting up. To protect my fish, I had no choice but to go the generator route on the new system.

i wonder how long a computer ups could run a tank

you'd know precisely if you had read the second link in the second post ... :screwy:

Hello; My current approach is to understock a tank to the point that filtration and bubblers is not so critical. Of course in cold weather low temperatures will still be an issue.

I know what the JDM guys that like to cram as many huge fish into their tanks as possible do.

Step by step...

1. Dig one hole in garden for each of their monster fish.
2. Remove dead fish from aquarium and place in said hole.
3. Buy new monster fish once power comes back.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3.

All kidding aside, this is another one of the reasons I'm not keeping tropicals yet...I don't want to spend the type of money that it would cost to install a generator large enough to run my setup during a power outage.

This is what I'm doing to prevent power outages. Will have one installed before the snow flies this winter... http://www.generac.com/Residential/Guardian/Products/Guardian_Series_10_kW/

Good choice. Here's mine:

A Generac = peace of mind :)
I don't know where you are purchasing yours from, but when I bought mine last December, I got mine from EveryGenerator.com (they had the best prices at the time)

Thanks pacu mom, I asked if you pleased with Generac quality in the other power outage thread. I'm thinking of going with Sears because they gave me a reasonable price installed, but have not committed yet. Still shopping for the best deal with the most watts.. Thanks Ken
