Is this acceptable in any circumstances? i know of a few cichlids that are notorious for eating invertebrates... but are the rest fine with them? are any fine with them?

The biggest problem with freshwater clams is just keeping them alive. Most ive seen are cold/temperate water species that dont thrive in tropical aquariums. Also, they are filter feeders and it is always a challenge to keep from starving without sacrificing the cleanliness of your tank.

+1 exactly. Never heard of it working successfully.

And you never know when they die. They leave a awful mess in your tank chemically speaking when they expire. I seen them on ebay.

I had a couple with my Vieja Syn. and Geo tank in the pass and they did well in my tanks for a year in tropical water. However, when they die your water goes bad quick so you always have to keep an eye out on that. I feed my cichlids alot of pellets so feeding went well. I used to have a huge mussel and that lasted about 2 years. All my clams and mussel were taken from my nearby creeks because of curiosity hahaha.

One of my lfs constantly has them, from pure research and not actual experience, u can tell you that the mussels will send out larvae in the form of parasites that latch into the gills of your fish. The clams are fine though.
Not knowing whether or not they're eating/when they will unleash a nuclear weapon upon your tank (more like a grenade) is the problem
