fw moray eel

in short, no... there is actually no such thing as a Freshwater Moray as far as i know... all morays require at the very least high end brackish?

the only freshwater eel (which isn't a moray) i can think of is the swamp eel if i'm not mistaken...

I've seen freshwater Marbled Eels... that resemble there sea cousins. I'm not exactly sure on the salinity.... I think all eels are going to prefer around brackish conditions it helps there skin and movement.

I should probably also note, the only real freshwater eels, or so they are called since they resemble eels, are Spiny Eels such as Zig Zag Eels, Fire Eels, etc...

first off there are true freshwater morays just not the common ones sold in th trade,i asked nothing about keeping them in freshwater so there was no need for you to share that info. now is there anyone who has tried to keep one of the fw morays sold in the trade in full salt if so results, if not please dont respond. not trying to be rude just dont what feedback on what someone read or heard looking for people with personal experince.

Based on the title of your thread I do not think there is any harm in fat homer clarifying the situation as I feel many "freshwater morays" die due to the fact that they are not freshwater eels...this forum is not all about you even if you started the thread, I came to look as I have often wondered why so many die, he pretty much answered that.

If you want a full salt eel then buy a saltwater eel IMO.....no need to be so aggressive.

the title was just me using the common name for the fish that has nothing to do with the question. the post is about me because i asked the ? if you wanted to know why they die you should have ask that ? i know they are not freswater or i wouldnt be asking if he could be kept in salt. also if i wanted a saltwater eel i would buy one, eel is getting beat up in the brackish tank and wandering if i could put him in my salt tank instead of let it get killed cause i like the eel. last not being aggressive just amazing how everytime somepost a ? instead of getting a strait answer you get a bunch of people trying to prove they no more about fish than you. yet not one person said yes or no with a valid reason or personal experience.

i asked if the eel could be kept in full salt and he sa no it can not live in full freshwater it needs high salinity he was in such a rush to post he couldnt have read the ? lmao

I do love all of the responses that never answered the correct question...

Anyway, it appears that it is best to just keep these guys in brackish. Full saltwater may be too much for them, but IMO, I don't see why it couldn't be possible, however I've only kept them in brackish water. It may shorten the lifespan.

No, there aren't. If you want to demand the type of responses you get, at least use scientific names so people know which of the so-called fresh water morays you're talking about.

G. polyuranodon and G. tile are most commonly sold as freshwater morays, there are other estuary species as well that occasionally enter brackish water and rarely (accidentally) enter fresh water. I've kept both the above species, always in full salt, and the result is that they lived.
