I'm thinking of upgrading the fish in my 20 gallon long to a 40 gallon, and would like to do an interesting species tank in the 20.

What are my options as far as puffers go? Am I pretty much limited to a couple dwarf puffers? Are there any other small puffers that can be kept together peacefully that won't outgrow a 20? Or a single puffer that won't?

here check this out. almost any single puffer will do from this list. just not a Mbu or a Fahaka puffer. http://www.**************.com/forum/ug.php/v/PufferPedia/Freshwater/

Yes, I've seen a fully grown fahaka... I don't think it could be stuffed in a 20 gallon no matter how hard you tried, much less live in one!

I did see that list while researching before posting... was wondering specifically about keeping several puffers in the tank? Am i limited to dwarf puffers? What about south american puffers?

I think your going to be some what limited in choices if you want to keep more than 1 puffer in the 20G unless its Dward Puffers...

If you have the space to setup a larger tank you could try keeping a group of say 3 South American Puffers, although you'd be looking at roughly setting up a 90G tank... not to mention you'll most likely have to do a little teeth trimming every few months...

you could possibly get away with a congo or arrowhead considering how sedentary they are. yes they can either grow to about 6" each but they are very sedentary puffers that generally wait in hiding about 99% of the time for prey to come along. You'd only be able to do a single puffer though and you'd have to certainly keep up with the water maintenance.

Sooo it's definitely either 1 small-medium size puffer or dwarf puffers? Gotcha.

I do weekly 50% water changes, split into two 25% sessions a few days apart. Would that be sufficient? I have a python so it's really not a lot of trouble...

What would a good number for dwarf puffers be for a 20 gallon long, heavily planted? 3? 4? Having a hard time finding info about determining gender...

I have three different species in one of my tanks. they are on my info if you want to check them out.
I really don't recommend this, especially in a tank as small as 20g.

50%, 1x/week is fine.

You could do like 4 Dwarf puffers, with a ratio of say 1M - 4F puffs to help ease on aggression between them all...

And listen to PP's advice, nothing worst than mixing puffers together (especially different species), since more times than not it will end with some of the puffers dead...
