FW to SW and Back Again?

I feel compelled to write this... I see to many GSPs die from people who don't know what they are doing. Also a kid that wanted to convert a nurse shark to freshwater was a recent thread that mfk took care of.

Fish get really stressed out traveling from saltwater to freshwater, and should not be tested in a normal home setting. Some fish are born into fresh, move to brackish, then the ocean. That is their natural life cycle, and should be recreated. However taking random fish or even fish that do this, and move them back and forth is cruel and not good. This can cause death. Fish only travel back and forth to eat when there is bare to no more food, and to breed. No ones fish is doing this in a normal aquarium setting so please refrain from being another walmart fish killer.
 
Here are the terms concerning fish migration patterns.

  • potamodromous fish migrate within fresh water only (Greek: Potamos is river and dromos is 'a running').
  • oceanodromous fish migrate within salt water only (Greek: 'Oceanos' is ocean).
  • diadromous fish travel between salt and fresh water (Greek: 'Dia' is between).
  • anadromous fish live in the ocean mostly, and breed in fresh water (Greek: 'Ana' is up; The noun is "anadromy")
  • catadromous fish live in fresh water, and breed in the ocean (Greek: 'Kata' is down)
  • amphidromous fish move between fresh and salt water during their life cycle, but not to breed (Greek: 'Amphi' is both)
The last term, "Amphidromous" is the characteristic this thread is concerned with.
 
a little unsure of these but dormitator maculatus(fat sleeper) or gobiomorus dormitor(Big mouth sleeper).

Black Mollies can easily go back and forth with the proper acclimation. I use BM to cycle saltwater tanks and then transition them through brackish water to fresh water and put them in community tanks.
