I got my FX5 on ebay NIB shipped for $199. It was a no brainer...considering I still see them in LFS for $350-$500.
I used 2 liters of ehiem substrate pro...in my bottom and middle baskets and poly pillow stuffing in my top basket. I've had it running since march and it has been perfect. Really I couldn't ask for anything more than I have gotten from it. Now the quality will be proven or disproven over the next few years.
i got 2 fx5 love them but one motor packed up after 4 months but my fish shop replaced it with a complete new boxed fx5 so i got spare foam pads trays and pipes! 8)
A great deal depends on what media you use in the filters. I run flow meters on all of my cannisters and even the largest Eheims move half the water the FX5's do...Oh and that comment about eheims bieng a BIT more expencive...for the same size class your talking 3 to 4 times as expencive. at least at the retail level.
If I had enough money to use all Eheims then I'd switch everything over to Ocean clear's and seperate pumps...far more flow....better filtration by FAR than ANY cannister and way more reliable.
LOVE them just added 2 brand "new" FX5's to my tanks off of ebay for 195.00 including shipping, each....only time will tell concerning reliability, however for the price it was a great value!
i have 3 of them and they have been great so far, i did have an issue with the pump on one of them which was sorted by hagen who sent me a new one so i now have a spare impeller too.
With all three baskets filled with ceramic rings I think I spent about $20.00 on media. The outer foam is more than enough mechanical filtration IMO so I concentrated on extra bio-filtration.
ha this has turned into why you love your Fx-5 thread, they are great i found out, my water is crystal clear and i can't even hear a buzz from the thing, great filter, kudos to fluval.
