FX-6 Woes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Regardless of what filter it is, I do feel mechanical filtration should be cleaned on a regular basis. With that said, I believe the 2262 can go longer before clogging because it has the capability of supporting a larger bio load, not because of bypass issues. While you may need to supplement with some circulation pumps, I have no doubt my 2262 would sustain a moderately stocked 200 gallon tank.

....wouldn't rely on a 2262 to filter 125 gallons and I'm the ignorant one re: filters :)

I don't really understand your comment here...

I'm not trying to bicker about this. I did see in one of the online stores that it stated it was rated for tanks up to 500 gallons, but I think that's an ignorant statistic for the ad to list as we all know it's far from capable on its own.

You are welcome to do what you want. It will probably be ok. I just maintain the opinion that frequent and regular maintenance is the best course of action to keep the water at its highest quality. Otherwise, you will just be letting all of the fish waste and gunk build up and sit in the filter. Again, these are just my thoughts so you can do whatever you want with your system.

People need to stop associating the size of filter wither size of tank. While there is correlation , it's really about stock levels. If you have one fish in a 500g then a 2262 is plenty. If you overstock then it's not. You then need to decide if there is adequate flow across the tank to get debris to the filter.

just get rid of the fine filter floss.

I clean my fx6 on my heavily stocked 120 about once every 2 months. you do need to step back and look at the issue though.. it's not that the filter is doing a poor job.. in fact, it's doing a fantastic job!!

The filter doesn't just clog for the hell of it, it clogs because it is removing all the particles... of you really want to put two filters head to head, put them on the same tank and then after two months, rinse all the media into a bucket and let it evaporate. I say the one with more dirt is doing a better job.

anyways... you want to clean less so that means less (or coarser) filtration. I just use the foams (no top foam) and ceramic rings in mine.

I put floss in the top try and man it was toast in like 4 weeks. It looked like something you pull out if a drain.

Yal gettin' hung up on filter sizes and maintenance etc etc etc....use probiotics in your water...you'll never have to clean a can more than once every 6-8 months. I use RID-X in all my tanks, and all my filters have almost no build up in them except for a thin layer of sediment after all of the organic material has been broken down.

I run my FX6 with the outer sponges, bio rings in each basket, and the coarse sponges below rings in the 2 lower baskets. I use the sponges to catch snails before they get to the pump. My FX6 is like a snail farm inside. I probably dump a few hundred out every month. The breed like crazy in there.
