Lets try to make this thread as it was intended, a friendly discussion about
the pros and cons of each canister. Lets avoid being argumentative and just extol and discuss the various features, highlights and lowlights of the two hot canisters on the market.

Here was my one month review on the FX5, granted that was when my tank ws PACKED with driftwood (hence) the wood particles in the filter. i have sence cleaned it 2 more times and each time as i removed DW it got less and less packed with crud. i just cleaned it for the 3rd time the other day and now have no DW in the tank so i will know in another month or so how dirty it gets without all of the wood in the tank and have a better idea of how well it works. either way my tank is quite clean. :headbang2

Howdy,

I have the Pro 3 and experienced the same problem regarding floaties. The Eheim filter pads suck. I added extra filter wool. That's much cheaper, and my water is much better now. You should give it a try.

I have no clue how the Pro3 does not agitate the surface enough. Mine is quite powerful and circulates the 220 gal very well. Try positioning the spray bar differently. Also, you should check the flow meter if your pump output is max. Maybe you accidently reduced the flow rate. If your tank is considerably wider than the spray bar is long, you can get an extension kit to customize your filter for your tank size.

hi harleyk

did you take out the two pads and fill the space with wool or did you manage to fit in the wool in as well as the pads
my tank is at floor level with the filter next to it would that make a difference on performance ??????? (7*2*3)

I would think it would make a difference yes being it is on the floor there is no gravity to feed the filter? so flow would decrease?

would you like to give me a hand to lift it a few inches ??????

oh ya il just hop on my dingy and row over LOL :D

but i used to have the same type of problems useing magnum 350's with a tank resting on the floor, they would never fill all the way and hardly move water as they are a gravity fed filter. not saying that is the case with the eheim but may be your cause.

im no scientist ! im just guessing ! being a sealed unit i thought graverty would not be a issue

Howdy,

My personal guess would be that as long as the water level in the tank is higher than the top of the filter, you should be okay.

I left the coarse pad in the filter, it's kinda essential. I would not want to risk loose filter floss entering the impeller. Instead, I removed about 1-1.5'' of media from the middle basket and substituted it with filter wool. I stuffed quite a bit of wool in there. Thanks to the high torque of the Eheim, I do not notice any decline in flow rate even after a few months.

Good luck,
HarleyK
