You need to have an overflow from the tank to drain the overflow of water to the sump, and a return pump to pump water to the tank, that's what is overflowed from the tank...your sump has to be, Gravity fill, power return...
Couldn't he use some of those back pack overflows? I don't have a ton of experience here but ive definitely seen them used.

those retrofit overflows are great till the power goes out then you have trouble. as soon as the siphon is stopped and the pump restarts dry . if you dont have your tank drilled for an overflow i would not run a sump.

unless you set it up with an "Aqua lifter" vacuum pump...

There is a DYI PVC overflow that alot of members are successfully using as well...search "DIY PVC Overflow"

i went and bought one just now tested it in a large bin i use for water changes, they work very well i have to build a sump now.
here is a picture of barry enjoying the current made by the return on the powerhead.
Also with this one there is no need for the airlifter vacume thing as the siphon part stays full even when the pump is turned off very clever.

Yet again thanks all i woudnt get one of them on my tank i have glass braces runny all round the top yes i know not good i only allowed for pipes to fit in corners of the braces . Anyway need to build a diy one i think . I just looked for a overflow box in uk and cant seem to find one anyway as i was thinking of cutting my brace to fit it

I have an fx5 running it's own drain and return drilled into the back of the tank. Then I drilled 3 more holes in the back of my tank, 2 drains and 1 return for a sump with a 1200 mag drive. For the drains I am not using any overflow I have them plumbed with strainers and they are straight gravity into the sumps 2 towers. I put ball valves on all of the drains so I can control the flow into the sump. So it's working like a skimmer. I also have an eheim 2229 on it as well. If you need a better idea I can shoot some pics up for you. You will get alot more filtration if you use them separately than using the fx in conjuntion as a replacement for a mag drive.
