I don't know why I have bio-balls in the top tray but that's how it came.

I was thinking about purchasing some more BioMax to fill up the bottom and middle tray as well as having the Purigen and MatrixCarbon in the middle then taking the plastic bio-balls out of the top tray and having 2 blue pads there instead. Since there is already a little bit of BioMax in the bottom I don't see any point in changing to Pond Matrix instead.

Hey if it works why change it. The ceramic media you have to protect from getting clogged with dirt because of the tiny pores that house a lot of the bacteria. The bio balls don't have pores so it shouldn't be much of an issue if you like it that way

I just run lots of ceramic rings and some filter floss. Works well for me

I ended up setting it up like this
Top:foam blocks/matrix
Middle:foam blocks/bioballs
Bottom:scrubbies/ceramic rings

will see how it goes from here

remove the bioballs and replace it with more seachem matrix. bioballs in canister not efficient
