I just recently got a used fx5 (guy said it was only a few months old and all the parts look fairly new) and the question I had was in regards to the output.
When I put my hand in front of the output bivalve I dont feel much flow coming out of it. Should there be alot of water flow coming out of the bivalves? I have unplugged it and restarted it a few times now and the flow is still crappy. I'm not sure if I should open up the impeller housing unit at this point.

anyone else have this type of problem? my setup is on point with what the manual asks so I dont see any problem with that.

thanks

the flow of an FX5 is nowhere near what is advertised. this could be influeced by the height it has to travel, and also the media in the canister. take out all the baskets and run it empty. im sure you'll feel the difference :)

yes all the valves are fully open and I do have three full baskets of filter foam and some water cleaning stuff in the middle. The flow is really bad tho, I dont feel much water at all coming out of the bivalves. I am wondering if my impeller is bad? or something else is messed up?

yeah take all those pads out of the middle, they greatly reduce your flow. i only use the outer sponges in mine and have the center baskets filled with ceramic bio media. it gives me plenty of flow, even after travelling 6ft vertically

ok i will try that later tonight.

also when i say it has low flow, its alot less flow then my fluval 404's that are filled with sponge filters, filter floss, ceramics, and ammonia remover. the single output line on my 404 has a decent output, but the fx5 has literally none compared to it.

I replace the dual spout with a single 1" barb x slip 90. The flow increased pretty good.
