i have my hard plumbed with pvc and my flow is awesome with all 3 trays 3/4 full of ceramic rings

Did you use 1" or 3/4" pvc? Got any pics?

i used one inch, i do but they are on my lap top which is being serviced ( stupid hinges) but i have it and my xp4 run thru the holes drilled thru for a sump, i got the idea from someone on here that had a 180. He used a vinyl tubing to pvc and it worked great.

I run mine with prefilter rings in the top, bio in the middle and bio w/blue pad in the bottom basket. Mine flows pretty good. I may remove the prefilter rings and add more bio with an Eheim 2217 blue pad cut down for the prefilter.

so the fx5 stock has a crappy crappy flow when its filled with sponge and water cleaner pad?
crappy flow would not be accurate. And actually accuracy would be the word to focus on. The FX5 is a monster, you can't get by that fact, the problem is that the FX5 like most filters have a higher than reality GPH rating.

Each manufacturer uses their own methods to come up with this number so you can imagine how accurate it is. Anyhow, the FX5 while a monster does not "flow" as advertised when loaded with media. Now this is not to say it's not a monster when loaded up, it's right up there('ish) with the Eheim Pro 3 2080 and the Marineland C-530. I think both the Eheim and C530 have better flow when loaded up, but that still represents a staggaring amount from just one filter.

So in short, no the filter doesn not have "crappy" flow - yes it's "crappy" that it's flow is reduced so much with media in it - and that "reduced" flow still represents a ton of flow...get what I'm saying?

If they had an actual flow rating that matched more closely with reality it would appear better because the marketing bastards don't look like they are trying to fleece us.

Cheers

ok, what i mean by crappy crappy flow is that when i put my hand against the bivalves there is hardly any current that i can feel. it is much less than my single valve 404's, much much much less.

this is why i am wondering if there is something wrong with the impeller. i will definitely remove some of the media in the trays and see if the flow is still crappy.

also, when i unplug and replug the unit and it cycles, i do see alot of bubbles come straight up and out of the bivalves, and then after a few minutes when i put my hand in front of the bivalves i can hardly feel any current.

has anyone had this problem?

You have a problem with your fx5
Pull it apart and service it. Something is wrong !
Even with every tray full of sponge or whatever media the flow should still be very strong. Microbubbles are normally the indication when it's time to clean your media, but the flow is still strong.

I would pull the impeller and inspect it and remove polishing pads from the center trays. The foam in the outside of the trays will not slow the flow unless it's totally filled with crap. Also check the hoses and valves for restriction.

In my FX5 I have the standard outer foam in all 3 trays. The center of the 2 lower trays I have filled Biomax. The top I have a mesh bag of carbon. It's been set up since February on my 120 with a 22" RTC, 14" Gar , and 9" Giant Gourami. I also run an AC110 on it. The flow from the FX5 will hit the front glass when I lower the water during water changes.
