Fx5 for 40 breeder

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Agree. But if you plan on upgrading tank size down the line, you could already have a seeded FX5 ready to go. That's really the only reason it would make sense.
I see a lot of posts lately about really really extreme filtration systems, and I just wonder if you have to go to such lengths to keep your tank stable, maybe it's time to get a bigger tank or get rid of some fish. But I know some guys love the JDM tanks. :)

absolutely!even when you upgrade a big hob and a couple of big sponge filters can do the same thing as an fx5 on a 125...but if you have the bucks it can be fun to say "i got an fx5":)

i personaly like over filtration. i still have my water changes but the cleaning of the filter media isnt as frequent.
over filtration is for some reason an ongoing arguement when the only downsides i see are water current and cost of electricity. i wish i could afford the kind of filtration on all my tanks that i have on my display tanks.

I love the fx5 I have one setup on a 55 gallon right now and it's fine but overall not needed. Only using it because That's what I have around.

Ive read that u can never have too much filtration, but for a 40 breeder and 1 flowerhorn, will it be overkill?

I currently am running 1x AC110 and 1x AC70 HOB, 1x AC50 powerhead, and 2x 30% water changes/week.

I dont need a canister, but I would like one to have pristine water. Will the Fx5 be too much flow in the 40? I could just run it with Bio Media...or maybe ill just get Eheim or Aquatop..

FX5 is way too strong of a current for a 40 breeder.......Unless there is some comtrol on the output......I would down grade to an AC101 for the 40 breeder......

I like to hear all the different views ppl have on filtration and over-filtration.
Im not gona get an fx5 for now. I agree w/ F1 VET that unless I use the valve, the current will be to strong.

For a 40breeder, I think HOB filters are the best choice. My combo of the AC110 and AC70 + powerhead is great and I recommend it to all!

Bringing this back for 1 canister Q...
How about a Rena xp2/3 for a 40breeder? Ill keep up the w/c's, just wondering about this GPH...as I hear this things are quiet and efficient.

BTW, im keeping my AC110 + 70 combo on the tank for now cause ill probably jus be over-doing it anyways

just 1 ac 110 is plenty for 40b ...if you do w/c's.......but....an xp3 and even an xp2 by itself will work...:)

LOL. I have 1 sponge filter running on each of my 40g breeders. The water is crystal clear, and the fish are healthy. Save your money a get a bigger tank, IMO.
