FX5 Heads up...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im gonna have to try that potscrubber idea that everyone is raving about--it seems like a great idea...

They do work well,at a fraction of the price of other bio material.Gettin harder to find though.

Doesn't the same crud that clogs up the polishing pads clog up the pores in the bio-media if you remove the pads? I also thought it was best to run micro-filtered water slowly over bio-media for maximum effectiveness.

I used polishing pads in my FX5 when i first got it and they blocked up in about three days!! these things have too much flow to handle polishing pads unless you want to replace them every day!!

ceramic rings and pot scrubbers in both of mine-rinse everything every second month.
Works awsome!Pot scrubbers are cheap!I alternate carbon in here and there too.

Pretty much the same here. I use biomax rings and the flat green pot scrubbers stacked to fill the tray. My top basket also has a bit of filter floss.

No the bio media wont clog up because the water for the most part is flowing AROUND it rather than through it. Strangly enough the huge flow rate of the FX is the problem. However the polishing pads are NOT missed AT ALL.

But once you clog the pores of the bio-media like ceramic rings, Matrix, CellPore, etc. the surface area for BB is then limited to the outside shell. So the hundreds of square inches of bio surface becomes only a few square inches.

I think a single XP3 or Fluval 404 filled with pores bio-media and a separate high-volume powerhead for circulation may be more effective than an FX5.

I think that's another reason why the pot scourers may be better. They may not have quite the surface area of expensive bio media, but they're also not as tight and don't get clogged up so easily.

good to know as i will be running 2 FX5 when i get my new tank built. will have to keep a close eye on them.
