Hey folks,

Just picked up a used FX5. The 3 baskets have foam around it, the middle of the baskets is empty, is that where I put the Fine Filter Pad in? Also, do I just put 1 in for the 1st basket or 1 for each basket? Thanks

you can fill the inner baskets with Biomax. I put Biomax in the bottom and the middle, and fine filter pads on the top. What size tank and whats the stock of the tank?

Thanks pal, 85g tank with 3 piranhas. I'll put the biomax in the middle and bottom basket too.

You can put a prefilter media in the top filter basket and put the filter pads on top of your media in each basket. This saves the media from becoming prematurely clogged.

prefilter in the top basket, and bottom and middle are bio max = best combo! those fine pads can clog easy and can compromise things. ur better off with the prefilter in the top.

you will need 6 boxes of biomax and 2 boxes of prefilter. each basket holds 1500 grams of media.

:) Thanks for all the help.

Fine pad goes on the bottom basket on top of the substrat you are using.

If you put the fine pad on top then your are going to run into problem really fast as the water will first hit the fine pad and all the large junk will clog it slowing the flow.

Can members stop suggesting the use of prefilter in a canister filter which aleady comes with prefilter material, the coarse sponge.

Prefilter should never be used in a canister unless you are indeed using it to filter out large debris before all other media.

The Fx5 uses a low PPI coarse sponge which traps all the large particles. Using prefilter is not going to help your fx5 perform any better. It like using a coarse sponge AFTER a micron filter pad. Just doesn't do anything anymore.

You can set the filter up how you want. I'll add my suggestion as to the setup.
- All three baskets filled with BioMax. The top tray, fill halfways or slightly more with BioMax
- Filter Fiber on top of the BioMax in the top tray.
More bio. media, easy cleaning and no need to disturb bio. media to get access to filter pad.

This is a good idea for some. I just don't like the fact that the bio media may clog up with "junk" quicker than if you have only filtered water passing through it.

i have biomax in the bottom and biomax in the middle and on the top i have substrate pro..
