Can members stop suggesting the use of prefilter in a canister filter which aleady comes with prefilter material, the coarse sponge.

Prefilter should never be used in a canister unless you are indeed using it to filter out large debris before all other media.

The Fx5 uses a low PPI coarse sponge which traps all the large particles. Using prefilter is not going to help your fx5 perform any better. It like using a coarse sponge AFTER a micron filter pad. Just doesn't do anything anymore.

You can set the filter up how you want. I'll add my suggestion as to the setup.
- All three baskets filled with BioMax. The top tray, fill halfways or slightly more with BioMax
- Filter Fiber on top of the BioMax in the top tray.
More bio. media, easy cleaning and no need to disturb bio. media to get access to filter pad.

This is a good idea for some. I just don't like the fact that the bio media may clog up with "junk" quicker than if you have only filtered water passing through it.
thats what i always said, i just use the rings for filtering out debris and all 3 with biomax

sorry to hi-jack but whats the different between biomax from fluval and bio glass from azoo..just curious about those two, you can get 3L of azoo for 25$

Thats the point of my post though. The coarse sponge will be filtering the debris. Your better off putting in some filter fiber or a less coarse sponge in the center baskets than prefilter. The filter will be much more efficient.
