If I wanted to hook my FX5 up to the overflows of a drilled tank would be the downside of doing this? would it adversly effect the performance of the FX5 or would it run just fine??

It should be just fine.

Well Likewise, Would having a Sump and having the overflow run to the sump then the Fx5 hookup to the sump as teh Dishcharge pump would that be fine till i can afford a pump?

I think this might cause more head pressure on the FX5 since the input and output at not at the same height.

Not sure how much that would cut down on flow

Would this work the same in replacing a sump? What if the overflow is like a hang on filter?

This would be something different, although it could still potentially work. You would just have to worry about he FX5 running dry should the power go out. I don't think I would trust this one.

would you like to explain how the Fx5 would run if the power was out? :ROFL:

My guess is that if the overflow is sized right for the intake of the FX5 then it will always have a good columb of water pushing down on the filter and cant run dry but given the flow not being enough then it could run dry and gt hot and then u just shot 300+ bucks instead of a sump pump which could only be about a 100 bucks.

I was referring to the HOB style overflow and the fact that the siphon box could potentially empty before water started flowing in when the power kicked back on, thus running the FX5 dry. There is a much smaller window to operate when doing it this way.

There are two conversations going on here;

Canister filters plumbed to gravity fed overflows

Canisters plumbed to HOB or siphon overflow.
