FX5 hooked up to overflow?

I was referring to the HOB style overflow and the fact that the siphon box could potentially empty before water started flowing in when the power kicked back on, thus running the FX5 dry. There is a much smaller window to operate when doing it this way.

There are two conversations going on here;

Canister filters plumbed to gravity fed overflows

Canisters plumbed to HOB or siphon overflow.

i was just kidding .. :chillpill::naughty:

Either way, as soon as enough water evaporated to drop the water level enough to reduce flow to less than the return, the pump would start sucking air.

Yea its prolly not best to do this if u have a choice. Make a sump or buy one and have outstanding Water quality. What im doing with my 225. Ill keep my Fx5 on with it. Prolly just fill the Fx5 with Bio media and remove all the trays.

Well it was just a thought, to run a 55g refugeum (1 in and 1 out) and on the other over flow hook up the FX5 filled with nothing but poly fill for uber mech filtration, on a 125 :headbang2

Talk about overkill...

But, if you're going to have a sump plumbed to one set of overflow/return, then that would keep the water level in the tank stable. In that case, you could plumb the FX5 to the other overflow/return, because the water level in the tank will always stay constant thanks to the sump.

The only problem I see is with power outage/water change. You'll have to let the sump get the tank back up to level before turning on the FX5, or you risk it running dry.

Ok so u think i should fill the Sump full of Bio balls or w/e and fill the Fx5 full of Mech filters and call it a day? i think the Fx5 does such a good job that the Filters will be dirty in a day or so and will need a change.

Yea its over kill, but the reason I wanted to use the FX5 for mech only is b/c I wont need bio media in it, why not get extra crispy water? Makes more sense than to just let the FX5 sit in a closet. That and I could use a single 700gph pump on the refugeum so it dosent suck the plants into the pump chamber but I will still be circulateing plenty of water.

Nope no bio balls in the sump, just plants. And how quickly the poly fill in the FX5 clogs up depends on how dirty the tank is. I will only have 2 fish in this 125 so it wont get clogged very quick. But I wont have to worry about NO3, PO4 or algae anymore, water changes will be there just to vac out poo and re-mineralize the water.

If you have a sump or refugeum takeing care of your bio load ( I prefer plants b/c they export the NH3/4 directly, no nitrates) Then just fill the FX5 with the sponges, and whatever various levels of mech media you see fit. I plan on doing bonded filter padding in my top tray, poly fill in the mid tray and then a bit more poly in the bottom tray with a micron polishing pad at the very bottom. Crispy ftw.
